Request a Grant Writer

Grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to USA nonprofit organizations for initiatives that protect the rights of citizens and combat discrimination. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to applying. Funding is intended to help safeguard the basic freedoms that are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, to eliminate all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and to assist government agencies to be more accountable to the public. The Foundation will also consider contemporary societal issues that may arise.

The Herb Block Foundation is committed to defending the basic freedoms guaranteed all Americans, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice and improving the conditions of the poor and underprivileged through the creation or support of charitable and educational programs with the same goals.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants in the range of $5,000 to $25,000 will be considered.

Term of Contract:

Grants will be considered for one year's funding.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be nonprofit organizations classified as 501(c)(3) organizations by the Internal Revenue Service. Applicants for the Defending Basic Freedoms may be national.

Grants will not be made for capital or endowment programs, nor for sectarian religious purposes. Grants cannot be used for lobbying or other partisan purposes.

No more than 10% of a grant may go to indirect costs (outside of those for general operating support).

- LOI's Due: October 3, 2019
- Full Proposal Invited: November 14, 2019
- Full Proposal Due: December 12, 2019
- Proposed Board Meeting: January 21, 2020

Organization must choose to proceed through the whole application process either via online or hard copy. All applicants, including current and past grantees, must submit a Letter of Inquiry if you expect to apply for the next fiscal year.

Online applications must be submitted by midnight of the deadline date listed in the Application Timetable. Hardcopy Letters of Inquiry must be received by mail or dropped off in The Herb Block Foundation's offices no later than 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date listed in the Application Timetable.

The Foundation selects projects for further consideration with an invitation for a Full Proposal.
